Many think that believing in God, Christ, and the gospel is a “blind leap in the dark.” They say Christians cannot defend their faith with evidence but accept it blindly. Some who profess to be Christians would agree; they say we should simply accept the gospel without proof. What is the truth?
Consider what God’s word says about blindness vs. sight and light vs. darkness.
What God’s Word Says about Light vs. Darkness
John 12:46 – I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.
2 Corinthians 4:6 – God commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:8 – For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
1 Peter 2:9 – But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
Accepting the gospel of Jesus Christ is not a leap into darkness. On the contrary, those who are not following gospel are the ones who are in darkness. Jesus Christ is the light. Those who believe and accept the gospel come out of the darkness into the light.
(1 Thessalonians 5:5; John 8:12; Acts 13:47; 26:18; Philippians 2:15; 1 John 1:7)
What God’s Word Says about Blindness vs. Sight
Matthew 15:14 – Jesus referred to those who teach false doctrine as blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch. ( Matthew 23:16-26)
2 Corinthians 4:3,4 – …if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
Ephesians 4:17,18 – …you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.
So those who follow doctrines other than the gospel are the ones who are blind. When we believe and accept the gospel of Jesus Christ, we leave blindness and accept the truth. Those who continue in error are those who are truly blind.
(John 9:39-41; 12:39,40)
Conclusion
Accepting the gospel is not a blind leap into the dark but a step from darkness to light.
One of the unique qualities of the gospel is that it is based on evidence: creation, fulfilled prophecy, miracles, the resurrection, and the character of Jesus. When people accept other religions or no religion, they are the ones who lack evidence for their views. Only when people accept the gospel do they leave darkness and come to the light.
When we call on people to accept the gospel, we must be willing to offer them the evidence for believing in God, Jesus, and the Bible. We must give an answer for our faith (1 Peter 3:15).
Have you accepted the gospel? Are you following faithfully the teachings of Christ?
