A young lady described her prayer as low-key. Many people have low-key religion in worship, Bible study, devotion, and morality. Is this zealous religion or lukewarm religion?
A young woman once told our son-in-law that she and her boyfriend had fled from the police in a high-speed chase. She said she was praying for their safety, but it was a “low-key prayer.”
How do you define a “low-key prayer”? It sounds like prayer from someone with little commitment to God. They know they are wrong yet still hope God will help them in an emergency.
I suspect that many people are “low-key,” not just in prayer, but in religion in general, though they may not admit it as honestly as this young lady did. Consider some examples:
Low-Key Worship
Many people may be “low-key,” not just in prayer, but in worship in general.
Instead of attending church meetings regularly, they rarely come for Bible classes or Sunday evening, but occasionally for Sunday morning assembly.
Their finances are tied up in their personal interests, so they may give some into the collection but not necessarily every week and usually not proportional to their prosperity.
Their worship demands little devotion or self-sacrifice. They may know they should do better, yet somehow they hope to get by so God will still accept them anyway. Their worship is “low-key.”
Matthew 15:8 – These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.
Low-Key Bible Study and Teaching
Some rarely study the Bible at home. They may occasionally look over the assignment for Bible class. But there is little real interest.
They prefer teaching that just skims the surface with little real depth. And they surely do not want preaching that clearly rebukes sin, especially not their sins.
They may know that they really should study more diligently, but they hope somehow to get by and God will somehow accept them. Their Bible study is “low-key.”
They are not like:
Acts 17:11 – The Bereans who received the word with all readiness and searched the Scriptures daily.
Psalm 1:2 – The godly man who delights in the law of the style='text-transform:uppercase'>Lord and meditates on it day and night.
Matthew 5:6 – Those whom Jesus blessed because they hunger and thirst for righteousness.
(Joshua 1:8; Hosea 4:6;2 Timothy 2:15)
Low-Key Morality
Some may not practice extreme immorality but they practice a little profanity and dirty jokes, a little drinking, occasional breaking of civil law, loss of temper, abuse of a family member, something small brought home from work without permission.
They may know that they are wrong, but somehow they hope to get by and God will accept them anyway. Their moral standard is “low key.”
Romans 12:2 – Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 13:14 – Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
Conclusion
What people may call “low-key” sounds to me like what the Bible calls “lukewarm.”
Revelation 3:15,16,19 – I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. … As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.
