Lessons from a Star: Christians Should Shine

Like the stars in the sky, God created Christians to shine. The good works Christians do should bring glory to God.

The following thoughts are suggested in a book by one of my favorite authors, Steven Bly.

Consider a Star

Genesis 1:14-17 – God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth.

So God created stars to give light on the earth. Consider the way stars shine:

A star always shines because God created it to shine.

A star always shines its brightest without worrying whether other stars shine brighter.

A star may be praised for its beauty, but it never brags and never asks for praise.

A star shines brightly when the sky is clear and people can observe and appreciate it; but when the sky is cloudy and no one can see it, a star is always shining just as brightly.

A star shines brightly on those who are young and on those who are old, on the rich and the poor, and on people of every race and nationality.

A star shines brightly when things go well and when things go bad.

A star always shines because by shining it gives glory to God.

Psalm 19:1 – The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.

Now Consider a Christian

Matthew 5:14 – You are the light of the world.

Like the stars, Christians should always shine because God created us to shine.

Like the stars, Christians should always shine their brightest without worrying if someone else shines brighter.

Like the stars, Christians may be praised for their achievements, but they should never brag or ask for praise.

Like the stars, Christians should shine brightly when other people observe and appreciate them; but even when no one sees and no one expresses appreciation, we should always shine just as brightly.

Like the stars, Christians should shine brightly for those who are young and for those who are old, for the rich and the poor, and for people of every race and nationality.

Like the stars, Christians should shine brightly when things go well and when things go bad.

Like the stars, Christian should always shine because, by shining we give glory to God.

Matthew 5:16 – Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

So a Christian shines by doing good works. Do you shine like the stars that God created to shine? Is your light shining, or has it gone out? Is your light dim, or is it shining brightly? Why not determine to let the light of Jesus shine brightly in your life?
